The Magic of In-Person Learning: The UP x Learn German PH A1 Basics Session

Celebrating Deutsche Woche 2026

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the UP Department of European Languages and the UP Deutscher Verein for the kind invitation to be part of the recent "Deutsche Woche 2026" at the University of the Philippines Diliman. It was truly an honor to participate in the UP Sprachcafé alongside Frau Anke Moersheim and to engage with students during the "Wohin führt Deutsch?" session.

There is a specific kind of electricity that fills a room when a group of people are all struggling, and succeeding, to master a new language together. While digital classrooms have their place, nothing quite matches the kinetic energy of the recent face-to-face session at UP Diliman. This collaborative A1 basics lesson with Frau Anke was a perfect testament to why in-person learning remains a gold standard for many.

Turning Grammar into Entertainment

For those unfamiliar, mastering the A1 basics can often feel like the most daunting part of the German journey. It requires a solid grasp of foundational grammar and vocabulary to build a strong start. On a computer screen, learning these fundamentals can sometimes feel like a solitary puzzle. In this collaborative session, the foundational grammar and vocabulary of A1 were transformed into an entertaining game-like experience that felt like a high-stakes, hilarious game show.

Frau Anke has a reputation for being an incredibly patient and lovely teacher who knows exactly how to push students to their limits. During this joint session, she transformed these complex grammar blocks into interactive challenges. Instead of just clicking a mouse, students were moving, gesturing, and engaging in real-time debates about whether a specific preposition or case was the right fit. The "entertainment" factor wasn't just a distraction; it was the engine that made the information stick.

The Face-to-Face Advantage

While online sessions offer convenience, the in-person experience provides two critical elements: structured accountability and deep peer connection.

  • Structured Accountability: In a physical classroom, there is no "turning off the camera" when you feel tired. You are present, engaged, and held accountable by the teacher’s direct eye contact and the shared focus of the room.
  • Peer Connection: The "comradeship" mentioned by other students is palpable in person. There is a unique bond formed in the "sidebars"—those quick whispers with a seatmate to double-check a conjugation or the shared laughter when someone makes a particularly funny mistake. You aren't just a square on a screen; you are part of a community.

Beyond the Screen

Some students naturally learn better in person because they crave that structured environment. In Frau Anke’s class, the direct feedback was instantaneous. You could feel the collective "aha!" moment when a difficult concept finally clicked for everyone. This shared energy creates a momentum that is difficult to replicate through a webcam.

Learning German is a challenge, but as many LGPI students have noted, having the right support and encouragement makes all the difference. Whether you are just starting your A1 journey or conquering B2, the experience of learning in person reminds you that you aren't just chasing a certificate, you are building a future.
